One GIANT leap for mobile gaming... PS3/X360 quality visuals have arrived!

Epic Citadel was released a few hours ago on Apple's AppStore; it's an Unreal Engine 3 tech demo where you walk around an abandoned medieval town while trying not to drool and/or slobber all over yourself.

To anyone who has an iPhone 4, you owe it to yourself to GET THIS NOW. Not sure how this looks on a 3Gs, but feel free to take it for a spin.

I'm still in shock/awe that i'm looking at these beautifully rendered visuals on such a tiny device; this really sets the bar high for future portable systems to come.

Does one actually do stuff like play or just walk around looking at things in this game? :fear:

The (free) tech demo is just a slice of the pie:

Here's a peek at the game running on the iPad:

Played it a little more. Had frame rate problems in certain areas at a few times but it must be better on the iPhone 4. Sounds are nice and visuals are great. :good:

Controls feel fine too. You can move the character by move the virtual left analog stick and you can look around by swiping at any part of the screen. You can also move by just tapping on the road ahead and the player moves to that place like a strategy game.

By the look of my battery when I played the game for just a little while I'd be surprised if the battery lasted even an hour while playing the game.

Some of the screenies I took : :)

Wow, these visuals are way better than winpho7 games. :good: On second thought, its just a tech demo, and not a proper game, probably running on maximized cpu usage. Graphics will get worse, once you add the code for player movement control, decision algorithms, and other blah-blah stuff. Plus, battery lifetime is also not considered in this demo, so, I can safely say, final visuals will be hardly any different, than the games already developed for iphone. <_<

And, comparison to PS3 or 360, as mentioned in thread title, just doesn't feel right. Mobile gaming has still a lot more to do. Also, virtual analog sticks are dumb, by the looks of it.

jeez, given how hopelessly fragmented android alread is dont think any game dev is gonna waste time on tegra.

What a conclusion! Nostradamus much? They already demo'ed 2 people playing the a game yesterday with all those blah blah stuff you were talking about. Besides, they will obviously optimise the code further. Seen the demo of Rage on the iPhone btw? It is just as good as this if not better

Yeap that's the main limitation of portable gaming , I had to buy a spare Sony long lasting 1800mah battery for the PSP for 2.5k from PA to get 8 hrs of gameplay compared to 3-4 hrs of default battery.

The battery technology has to get to serious heights if we are ever to see graphics like that in gaming regularly on portables.
