Resistance Fall of Man 2: Autumn Release Confirmed

From Spong

___________________________________________________________________

Slipped into the bottom of a press release regarding the extension to Insomniac Games' 'Nocturnal' initiative comes the news that the PS3-exclusive, Resistance: Fall of Man 2 is due out in Autumn 2008.

The text reads:

"Insomniac Games is currently developing Resistance 2™, which will release this fall, exclusively for PlayStation 3."

This would more than suggest, therefore, that the Easter egg hidden in the video we reported yesterday indicates not only more enemies, but a demo for July.

The Greatest Hits copy has been dated on Play-Asia:

March 17, 2008 - Asia (PAL??) version - USD 34.9

March 19, 2008 - Japan version - USD - 38.9

http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-bp-49-en-70-2l9t.html

AFAIR, there was some problem with the PAL version right? That you cant go online if you are using a different region console?

Preview:RESISTANCE 2

Resistance 2

Every once in a while comes along an FPS game that is so popular and well received that it amasses comparisons to other FPS titles for years to come. On the console forefront, it was arguably the N64's GoldenEye 007 that sparked this trend, but Halo would catapult it to new heights. After the Xbox, all FPS games strive to reach the cult status of Halo. Thus far, very few games have amassed that attention, but there's no about it that Resistance was the PlayStation 3's halo-game for its 2006 launch. And with its popularity still rising, expectations for a sequel have risen drastically, as well. So when we heard of what Resistance 2 would offer, there was a collective dropping of jaws from gamers worldwide.

As is typical of Insomniac, they're going to take their original formula, and multiply it considerably, equating to Resistance 2. Now, be forewarned, if you do not wish to know the opening story of Resistance 2 *stop reading here!* Otherwise, continue at your own risk...Ready? Here goes. Once again, we take control of Nathan Hale, the officer who seems to be impervious to the Chimera virus. We are taken to Iceland by a Black Ops aircraft where the Special Project Research Administration (SPRA) base resides. Here at this base, we discover that Hale isn't the only one who is immune to the Chimera virus. The SPRA have gathered these invulnerables to form a force called The Sentinels. The SPRA base is found by the Chimera and attacked. The Sentinels fight off the attack, and escape to the United States.

Two years have passed since the Chimeran invasion of Great Britain, and The Sentinels are training in the United States. But now it's time for yet another Chimeran conquest: the United States. Attacking from both the East Coast and West Coast, The Sentinels will fight off the Chimera across a variety of American states, and we believe New York to be one of them.

The game will boast two campaigns, one of which is the main story campaign, and the other being a fully co-operative story campaign mode that'll support two players offline and eight players online! The Co-op gameplay will feature a focus on commanding your squad, to make the experience more involving. Furthermore, areas will be randomized for certain stages when playing Co-op campaign, but we're not sure how.

Each Sentinel in your squad possesses a different class, so they'll all tout their unique abilities. The examples of classes are Heavy Weapons, Special Ops, and Medic. The Heavy classed fighters are equipped with enormous and heavy weapons, such as a shoulder mounted minigun/chain gun. These fighters are capable of taking out multiple opponents in a swoop. The Special Ops guys are experts in precision targeting, with heavily update versions of the Bullseye gun that boasts a scope and fierce strength. The Medic class should be rather self-explanatory, these guys shoot special types of bullets that weaken an enemy, and also shoot bullets that'll heal a partner.

Resistance 2 will introduce a total of 12 new Chimera enemies, and Insomniac have also changed how the artificial intelligence works. By rescaling the A.I., enemies that are closest to you will, naturally, have a better chance of shooting you with precision, as opposed to enemies that are much further away. So you won't have to suffer from enemies way out in the distance who are connecting as if they were in front of you.

While we're on the topic of enemies, Insomniac says that the boss fights in Resistance 2 will be absolutely epic. Bosses will tower in height, and topple the size of those found in the original Resistance...impressive. That means Resistance 2 should be boasting one of the most powerful engines this generation will see - something that'll really demonstrate the capabilities of the PlayStation 3. Screenshots already indicate a notable visual leap over the original, and Insomniac claims that textures will remain sharp no matter what distance you look at them from. To go along with all of that, they've also gone and enhanced shaders, shadowing, and all other aspects of lighting considerably.

So, now that we know we've got eight-player co-op gameplay online, what's in store for the other online modes? Well, how does a total of 60 players simultaneously sound? You've no doubt heard the statistic before, but it still continues to raise excitement every time it's spoken about. 60 players makes 20 more than what the original could do, and we have no idea how 40 was even possible in the first place. To be clear though, like the original game, not all stages will be able to handle 60 player matches - only the largest will - so don't expect to pack yourself into a sardine can stage full of 60 people.

Insomniac promises sound quality via headsets on par with what a cell-phone sounds like. We already find Resistance 1's voice quality to be decent, so improving on that is quite nice. Finally, online will boast a stat tracking system with quite a bit of depth, and a horde of community features that'll co-cooperatively work with MyResistance.net, a social networking website (like MySpace, Facebook) for Resistance players.

Resistance 2 is scheduled to launch this Fall 2008, and you can bet your bottom dollar that it'll end up being one of the best games of 2008, one of the best online games of 2008, and perhaps one of the best of this generation.

^^ no actually i liked the preview. 8 player co-op sounds interesting, and since both R2 and GeOW 2 will release over the same time frame, would be interesting to see which gets the upper hand w.r.t critics, gamers, reviews etc etc :catfight:
