EIGHT DAYS

Developer:Sony London

Publisher:Sony

Genre:Action

Players:1

Platform:PS3

Release:

Originally known only for its breathtaking demo of an exploding gas station shown in video form at E3 2005(and later, a demo of a car being shot up in a different CES 2006 presentation) , this game eventually was revealed as Eight Days, a crime epic from SCE Studios London. Set in the desert of Arizona, the game features eight days in the bad times of the criminal element. The game features open environments that you can run in, with fully-modeled buildings that you can exploit when the action gets too heavy on the streets and outskirts.

IGN Preview

Twice when SCE presented the PlayStation 3, the company showed off tech demonstrations from a game in production at SCE Studios London. The first was an all-Cell processor gas station explosion with heat signature simulation and other real-time effects. The second was a car being shot up in a desert environment with real-time car deformation blowing holes in the car body, shattering the glass, and breaking down the car's actual geometry.

At last, we know what this game is, and why SCE has been teasing it all along. Though Sony did not confirm what of the trailer (if any) was real-time, the demonstration did show some high-intensity action and incredibly dynamic shooting that has us easily pumped up for it.

The game is called Eight Days. It's a badlands tale of thugs in the desert, apparently over a period of eight days. The trailer was from the infamous "Day 2." Here, a group of bad guys are seen standing around, blocking a road in the Arizona desert with their cars. Meanwhile, speeding towards them, our two heroes (or anti-heroes) are gunning it in American muscle cars dueling with chasers. The gameplay (assuming the game's play will follow the video's gameplay-like sections, whether or not this is a realtime clip) has a little bit of Pursuit Force action to it -- you can shoot between cars, even leaning out of the passenger window to shoot baddies up. The views shown in the demo trailer included a cool in-the-car perspective as well as cinematic angles, so hopefully we'll see that in-game.

Once the two shooters reach the thugs, the gameplay really takes off. Players can duck and weave around the environment, using anything around then to gain cover while firing at the bad guys. There were plenty of move shown for each character, including the ability to slide across the hood for a running charge to bring action into closer quarters. One of the coolest aspects shown in the demo was when one hero leapt through the window of the nearby gas station -- the environment was a fully-rendered interior, complete with drinking glasses on the countertops to blast apart as players engage in firefights outside (as well as the gun battle shown with the baddie inside.) In the trailer, this sequence plays out with no pauses or change-over in the engine or action as you move between detailed in-door and outdoor areas, much like the breeching in Resident Evil 4 -- in fact, the trailer indicated here that this was gameplay, as an aiming reticule appeared on-screen several times then went away during the realtime cinematic of him crashing through the glass (while bullets continued to track, we don't know if this diving sequence is controllable or just a canned animation) and then the gun indicator then fading back in when the "gameplay" started back up.

Special effects in every sequence of the game were awesome. The raining of glass, the destruction of cars, the level of detail on humans and environments and other elements... all good stuff. It was capped off when the gas tanker rolled in. We don't know exactly what it was doing there, but we were glad that it was as it came crashing into it the station and wiped it out with a furious spray of metal and debris. It didn't explode... at least, not at first. Our heroes were seen emerging from the rubble, alive and with bad-assed attitude still intact. As they rolled away from the impressive spread of disaster, one fellow tossed his lighter into the tanker's leaking stream of fuel, and as they left it all in the distance, we witnessed the station exploding (with effects much in line with last year's real-time explosion demo.)

As with E3 2005, the presentation here did not prove whether the game was real -- it only set our expectations for real-time gameplay in the stratosphere, leaving not enough evidence yet that they can pull it off but still the impression that this game may very well rock if it works the way it was shown. Eight Days was not playable at SCE's event and is not expected to be shown anywhere else at E3 this year, but we'll be following this game closely for further news on the title.
