THQ Loses $38.4m In the June 2011 Quarter

THQ financial figures for the June 2011 quarter have arrived. On revenue of $195.4m, THQ posted a loss of $38.4m for the quarter on a GAAP basis. In the previous June quarter, THQ had revenue of $149.4m and a loss of $30.1m, and so the losses increased with the revenue increase year over year. On a non-GAAP basis, revenue was slightly different with losses even higher for the quarter.

THQ cited the following highlights for its first quarter of the fiscal year:

The company's line-up featured at the Electronic Entertainment Expo ("E3") garnered 25 awards from more than 50 nominations across the portfolio for upcoming titles such as Saints Row: The Third, Darksiders II, Metro: Last Light WWE'12, UFC Undisputed 3, Warhammer(40,000: Space Marine, Devil's Third, andinSANE, as well as forthe uDraw GameTablet.

The company announced an agreement with Turtle Rock Studios Inc., the creators of the multiple award-winning "Left 4 Dead," to publish a new core title scheduled to be released in calendar 2013.

On June 15, 2011, top-industry talent Patrice Désilets joined THQ, working out of its Montreal, Quebec development studio on a new original AAA title.

Building on last year's successful launch of the uDraw GameTablet for Wii, THQ unveiled plans to bring uDraw to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 high-definition consoles this fall with new creative functions and touch-screen features. The company is in production of a number of new uDraw titles, including Disney Princess, Marvel Super Hero Squad, and upgraded versions of our uDraw Studio software and Pictionary.

Overall though, the results were not good. THQ said, "We are disappointed in our first quarter financial performance. Sales of Red Faction: Armageddon and our licensed kids titles were below our expectations, and the late release of UFC Personal Trainer also adversely impacted the quarter," said Brian Farrell, THQ President and Chief Executive Officer. "Despite a light first half, we are looking forward to a strong and profitable second half, including what we expect to be the biggest third quarter, both in revenue and earnings per share, in our company's history, with proven franchises Saints Row, WWE and the uDraw GameTablet, all launching in November."

THQ also provided a breakdown of revenue by platform for the June quarter, which I've summed up below:

- X360 revenue increased to $51.5 in the June 2011 quarter from $50.2m in the June 2010 quarter.

- PS3 revenue fell to $35.8m from $52.8m but remained the second largest contributor for the quarter.

- Wii revenue fell slightly to $19.0m from $19.2m year over year.

- DS revenue (probably due to including 3DS) grew to $21.3m from $19.7m year over year.

- PSP revenue fell by half from $4.3m to $2.1m year over year.

- PS2 revenue collapsed to $1.0m from $4.7m year over year.

- Wireless revenue fell to $0.7m from $1.6m year over year.

- PC revenue grew to $9.7m from $7.8m year over year.

- The remaining revenue came from $53.9m in previously deferred funds.

- Sales outside the USA grew to $53.5m from $52.2m, while USA revenue fell sharply from $108m to $87.7m.

Overall, all of THQ's platforms had fairly modest changes year over year - save for THQ's Sony platform games which declined by over $20m - mostly on PS3 even with PSP / PS2 falling at a much faster rate.

More information from THQ may arrive shortly, if it does, look for this article to be updated.

I know this may be hard for you to understand until a future FW update

I still do not understand why does FIFA sell so many copies EVERY year, I mean why do people buy the same game again

what the hell changes in it EVERY year for a prospective buyer to ditch his last FIFA and buy the new one :scratchchin:

lolz..... You serious with that statement....???

Yea but you eventually see sales decreasing .. not increasing ... but anyway FIFA is a mainstream sports game with HUGE marketing ... and that too football is the most popular sport ... thats more than enough for it to see this kinda of sales.... but am curious , I never recall it being this high... is FIFA11 - 15m an all time high for Fifa games? saleswise...

Sales decrease only for updated versions, dlcs etc. The next title in the franchise need not sell any less even if visually its not much different. Take SC IV and V for example. And yeah, the target audience is huge.

FW updates wont work anymore it seems, a complete overhaul of the OS is needed. maybe u can poach some of the engineers who worked on zodbot.

I can't :(

They left us to join Ra.One the game development team,

Sony Ships 1.8m PS3s, Loses $191m in the June 2011 Quarter

Sony's results for the June 2011 quarter have arrived. The company generated revenues of 1.49T Yen ($18.456b) for the quarter, but lost 15.5b Yen ($191m) in the same time frame. In the previous June quarter, Sony had revenues of 1.66T Yen ($20.56b) and a profit of 25.7b Yen ($317m) at current exchange rates. Sony now expects fiscal year revenue to reach 7.2T Yen ($93b) instead of the previously forecast 7.4T Yen ($96b), based on the first quarter, while the profit forecast was lowered to 60b Yen ($778m) from 80b Yen ($1.04b). Among other negative headwinds, Sony has been hit by hacking, the Japanese Earthquake, and the continuining weakness of the dollar against the Yen.

Due to Sony's new restructuring for the current fiscal year, there are no clear numbers on profit and revenue for its video game division. Previously these figures were included with the Networked Products segment of Sony, but PS3 and Sony's other gaming devices are now lumped in with all consumer electronics - not just 'networked devices'. Figures may yet come out - and this article will be updated if they do, but the materials released so far do not have the data.

For the quarter, Sony shipped 1.8m PS3s, 1.8m PSPs, and 1.4m PS2s. Those figures are down from 2.4m, and 1.6m for PS3 and PS2, but the 1.8m figure for PSP represents a 600,000 unit increase, so Sony shipped only 200,000 fewer systems in the June 2011 quarter than in the June 2010 quarter. Sony has maintained its previous forecasts for the fiscal year - 15m for PS3, 6m for PSP, and 4m for PS2. No hardware forecast for Vita was given which suggests Sony still isn't quite sure how many it can make.

It is also interesting to point out that from July 2010 to June 2011, Sony has shipped 13.7m PS3s (the exact same figure as X360 in the past year)- so the 15m forecast clearly implies a price cut soon. The 13.7m is also down 1m units from the 14.6m PS3s Sony shipped in the year to September 2010.

Sony has also shipped 8.6m PSPs in the past 12 months, so the 8m forecast implies PSP will decline quickly once Vita releases.

Global lifetime to date figures for PS3 stand at 51.8m, with PSP at 71.3m, and PS2 at 152.3m units with the latest numbers.

Software shipments for Sony platforms for the quarter reached 26.1m for PS3, 6.6m for PSP, and 1.5m for PS2 for a grand total of 34.1m units. In the previous June quarter, software shipments were 24.8m PS3 games, 9.2m PSP games, and 3.4m PS2 games, or 37.4m in total. During the March 2011 year, software shipments for Sony's platforms reached 210m, and Sony expects software shipments to reach "about that level" again in the current fiscal year, although it is somewhat unclear if they are including Vita software in that forecast.

Lifetime to date software shipments for PS2 games stand at 1530.7m, while PS3 stands at 464.5m. PSP software shipments are now over 300m units - at 304.2m units to date.

Thus shipment attach rates are now 10.05 games per PS2, 8.97 games per PS3, and 4.27 games per PSP. The PS3 attach rate should drop some with the coming price cut, but within six to nine months the average PS3 owner will have bought 9+ games.

Nintendo Loses $323m, Cuts 3DS Price Globally, Lowers Forecasts

Nintendo's financial results for the June 2011 quarter have arrived. For the quarter, Nintendo revenue reached 93.93b Yen / ($1.12b) with losses at 25.516b Yen ($323m loss). These figures were down from the 188.65b Yen ($2.39b) in revenue and 25.216b loss ($319m loss) level achieved in the June 2010 quarter. Nintendo had previously expected revenue for the fiscal year ending March 2012 to reach 1.10t Yen ($13.9b) with profit reaching 110b Yen ($1.39b). The company lowered that forecast to 900b Yen ($11.4b) in revenue with the profit forecast down dramatically to 20b Yen ($253m) - a 90b Yen drop.

Part of the reason for the change in forecast is that Nintendo has maintained its 3DS forecast of 16m even though the device has clearly underperformed Nintendo's goals to date - and thus Nintendo decided to lower the price of 3DS to 15,000 Yen in Japan effective August 11, 2011, from the current 25,000 Yen price. There is no word yet on how this will impact the original DS line, which sells for around 15,000 Yen, but presumably that hardware will be further discounted as well. Nintendo is also cutting the 3DS price in the West by September 2011, as even a price cut of this nature can't push more than 1m - 1.5m units given the size of the Japanese market and the current performance of 3DS.

Nintendo made a couple of other forecast modifications as well. The bad news is Wii hardware projections were lowered to 12m from 13m while DS hardware projections were lowered to 9m from 11m. 3DS software however was raised to 70m from 62m. Wii software is now forecast to reach 110m games without bundles, down from 120m (125m ish overall, down from 135m), with DS software now forecast to reach 65m instead of 67m.

For the quarter, Nintendo shipped 1.56m Wiis, 1.44m DS systems, and 0.71m 3DS systems. Wii shipments were 110,000 to Japan, 530,000 to the Americas, and 920,000 to 'Other' for the quarter. 3DS shipments were 400,000 to Others, 210,000 to Japan, and 110,000 (that's the worst figure in the entire set of data) to the Americas. Finally, DS shipments were 50,000 to Japan, 150,000 to the Americas, and 300,000 to Others for the quarter.

Based on the figures above Nintendo expects Wii shipments to reach 10.5m over the next 9 months, with DS shipments reaching 7.6m, and 3DS shipments reaching 15.3m. Obviously the 3DS forecast is going to be the tallest order, but it might be doable with a global price cut soon.

Lifetime to date hardware shipments for Nintendo's systems now stand at the following levels:

Americas Others Japan Global Total

DS 55.69m 59.30m 32.87m 147.86m

Wii 41.71m 34.16m 11.71m 87.57m

3DS 1.43m 1.63m 1.27m 4.32m

The Wii, DS, and 3DS bases stack up to Nintendo's previous systems, on a regional basis, like so:

June 11' LTD Americas Japan Others Total

DS 55.69 32.87 59.30 147.86

GB 44.06 32.47 42.16 118.69

Wii 41.71 11.71 34.16 89.30

GBA 41.64 16.96 22.87 81.47

NES 34.00 19.35 8.56 61.91

SNES 23.35 17.17 8.58 49.10

N64 20.63 5.54 6.75 32.92

GC 12.94 4.04 4.77 21.75

3DS 1.43 1.27 1.63 4.33

Software shipments for Wii reached 13.44m in the June quarter, with DS software shipments coming to 12.13m and 3DS software shipments coming to 4.97m. Wii software was split 940,000 (Japan), 6.44m Americas, and 6.07m Others. 3DS software split 1.03m Japan, 1.84m Americas, and 1.67m for Others. DS software was split at 5.50m Americas, 4.89m Others, and 1.74m in Japan.

Lifetime to date software shipments for Wii, DS, and 3DS are now at the following levels:

Americas Others Japan Global Total

DS 346.32m 304.42m 200.88m 851.62m

Wii 402.94m 265.14m 61.46m 729.53m

3DS 5.78m 4.97m 3.21m 13.96m

Software shipments for the Wii, DS, and 3DS bases stack up to Nintendo's previous systems, on a regional basis, like so:

EOOpa.png

Nintendo should release some more information over the next few days, as Iwata typically presents information on Nintendo's performance after the initial wave of results release. Presumably we'll get release dates for Zelda, Mario Party, Kirby, and some other titles, as Nintendo's next set of results won't arrive until late October, and the company typically does not make major announcements for Gamescom or TGS. A global price cut for 3DS also looks like it could be coming soon, possibly this week.

Overall, it looks like Nintendo shipped far to many Wiis / 3DS systems to the Americas at some point, and that stock is still getting cleared out as figures for 'Others' this quarter were generally far better than Americas figures across the board. Obviously 3DS is more of an issue though than Wii on the overshipping front, as shipping 1.5m systems with 80m+ units in homes is very different from shipping 700,000 units with a base under 5m. Nintendo's results should improve somewhat next quarter, but 3DS hardware sales will have not really improved half way through the quarter, so it looks like Nintendo's profitability for this fiscal year will largely depend on how big Wii and 3DS blow up over Christmas. This is especially true since the DS forecast of 9m / 65m games implies only a 4-5m quarter for hardware, and a 30m quarter for software. With the price cuts to 3DS and Wii, their figures will probably be closer to 9m / 6.5m if Nintendo meets its new targets, with software at 40m / 60m - which means the massive 150m DS base is already far less relevant to Nintendo than the tiny 3DS base and the declining Wii base.

Zeebot failed to register that PS3 outsold Xbox 360. And Sony has three consoles in market compared to MS's one.

PS3 1.8 m

PSP 1.8 m

PS2 1.4 m

360 1.7 m
