Credit Card - Help & Recommendations

I'm looking to apply for a credit card and needed help with recommendation for a good one and some guidance with what factors like fees, interests and rewards to look out for.

I tried google-ing my way about it bit I'm honestly quite overwhelmed with  the information and options available. Nature of transactions on this would be travel/ticket bookings, online shopping, restaurant/dining & uber payments. What would be the best option to go for keeping the above in mind + all these rewards that everyone keeps raving about?

Apologies if this is a duplication of topics.

Get one mid tier card each from SBI, HDFC and ICICI and you have most of the deals/offers covered. Also, discuss about the due dates with the agent. Some cards have due dates towards the end of the month when you will be cash strapped and default. This was a cheap trick which was used earlier by some banks on lower end cards to trick you into paying interest.

Note: Do this only if you have strong will to abstain from splurging.

https://www.paisabazaar.com/hsbc-bank/hsbc-platinum-credit-cards/

https://www.m-icicibank.com/credit-cards/index.html?card=platinum-chip

These are two that I had considered. Both have no annual / renewal fee. Is there a catch here that I should be aware of?

Tonz of cards are free now, I have the following, all of them are lifetime free.

1. Icici Amazon Pay

2. HDFC Regaila

3. Citibank Shopper Stop Card

4. Yes Bank First Preferred

The only card I pay for is SBI elite, which is again technically free for first year, and I plan to cancel it before the end of year.

I get the option for Lifetime free HDFC Regalia on my netbanking.

But is it free without any catches? Like do I need to attach a monthly auto pay for a bill for that?

No conditions for me with any of those 4 cards, even if I don't use them at all.

I don't think you should get a CC if you have to worry about the due date. CC should be used for convenience, not for extending your credit and paying minimum amount per month. I know many peeps who have been in huge debt due to the non payment of full dues every month. Urban poors are real. Don't be one.

Thanks guys. I have ICICI & HDFC accounts, checking directly with them too if they have better offers. The HDFC Regalia page shows that there's a joining & annual fee, I'm assuming this varies as per the account. Also ICICI Amazon card seems to be invite only, so that is off the table for me.

Another thing I wanted to check, I have PAYBACK reward points on my debit card where the things I can purchase on the portal seem like absolute trash. I saw PAYBACK as a points partner on some of the cards. Is this all that is there to it or am I missing something here.

The hsbc card is pretty good. I have it. Also, you may consider American express membership rewards credit card too. Through referral, the annual membership is 1500 after the first year but you get 1000 bonus points if you make 4 transactions more than 1k in a month. And you can get ₹7k or so statement credit with 18k points. The customer service is also really nice. Although it isn't accepted everywhere like visa or mastercard cards are. That's the only con.

Thanks Adity, I think the HSBC one is the most likely candidate for me now unless my current banks have anything better to offer.

What does the highlighted part mean btw - 1000 bonus points every month on 4 transactions or just the first month? And what does statement credit mean?

If you have an account with HDFC, call them, they will give you regalia for free. It's a very good card.

Get the icici bank platinum credit card, its lifetime free. Talk to the bank and they will give u that card. Then go to amazon pay icici bank credit card page on amazon.in then there will be an button saying check eligiblity it will then let u take the amazon pay icici credit card. I think to be eligible u need to have an existing icici bank credit card and u will get the amazon pay card as an addon card and will share the credit limit with the main credit card.

No. I didn't have any ICICI Card but I found myself eligible. However, I didn't get any invite via email. I just casually checked this link https://www.amazon.in/cbcc/marketpage and I found that I can apply for it. and then I got the card.

I do have an account but once they told me that an auto pay is necessary for lifetime free.

Or the offer which is shown in my netbanking says that (in tiny letters) that for LTF, I need to complete form without any representative assistance but the form itself doesn't mention that. It has a link for terms and conditions that says first year is waived off and for next year you have to spend 3 lakh in a year if you want the subsequent year's fees to be waived.

Can you confirm if that's the case with your card?

I dont have use for a credit card myself, just for online shopping deals. So I shouldnt bother right?

Also I see that most people here use GPay and I wanted to have the whole UPI thing setup. Can someone explain what I should be doing?

Mine is 100% free, probably becaue of me being employee of Capgemini. Alternatively, if they put a membership charge call and tell them to cancel the card. If you are using it regularly and never defaulted, they will waive off the yearly charge anyway.
