It's kind of messy like how PS5 handles it. If you want to play XSX games or games that have XSX support (updated) then you need to use the internal SSD. Otherwise, an external SSD is fine for older Xbox games (Xbox, X360, Xbone). This table summarizes it pretty well. For instance, do you pay 700 per month for game pass or do you take advantage of the Gold stack-up for 3 years? The same way, most of PS5 users here buy-sell games or pick up pre-owned copies.
