Lockdown won't save us until we know whether to extend the lockdown, and we can get this information only by testing more. Since we are already in community transmission phase, i would think a minimum lockdown till June end but is that feasible? Also the more testing and more cases, the more people will take it seriously and stay at home. Our population density will not allow us to do like South Korea and have separate booths. Even 1 locality will have miles long booths and still not be enough. What will happen is like Italy - Over-crowding in hospitals and even healthy ones will get infected as @Right said. Also, deaths co-relate with actual nos., so we can estimate the spread just by the no. of fatalities. ICMR knows this and has been making decisions accordingly. Regarding lockdown, decision can be made to extend it. But it cannot be too long. Maybe a week or 2 at most, highest being May, if PM Modi can make a really emotional speech that tugs at the entire country's heart strings. The more no. of days passes - the less effective lockdowns become. People will see their finances disappear rapidly and feel the need to work. Groceries still need money. Others will get tired of what is essentially house arrest and try to come out. And ultimately you will end up with law and order problems in the country (Entire groups coming out to fight with police if lockdown is too long - making entire lockdown exercise pointless). Most people are not made to sit at one place for long periods of time. What I guess is - govt has been making hospitals ready like crazy in this lockdown period so hospitals are not strained and we don't reach stage 4. Meanwhile they will ease lockdown gradually on a limited basis - allowing limited areas and time periods to work, and keeping enogh time periods in between so tons of people don't come in contact with each other at the same time. Also, has ICMR released a statement that we are in Stage 3? Or is it just one of the infinite reddit and whatsapp "Doctors" you are basing your opinion off of? Issue isn't about the meet, which happened before ban was announced, issues is that at least 1,500 people continued to stay put even when the meet was over. This is the timeline and facts March 13: 3400 people gather at the Nizamuddin markaz as part of a religious gathering. March 16: Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal announces that no religious, social, political gatherings of more than 50 people are allowed in Delhi till March 31. People at the Nizamuddin Markaz still continue to stay put. March 20: 10 Indonesians who attended the gathering in Delhi test positive in Telangana. March 22: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Janta Curfew is observed across nation. No public gatherings were allowed for a day. March 23: 1500 people vacate the Markaz. March 24: PM Modi announces nationwide lockdown for 21 days. No public gatherings, any kind of non-essential movement outside residences allowed. Only essential services allowed to remain functional. March 24: Nizamuddin Police asks remaining people at the Markaz to vacate the area. March 25: Around 1000 people are still residing in the area defying lockdown orders. A medical team visits the Markaz and suspected cases are isolated in a hall within the building. Jamaat officials go to the SDM's office. File an application for permission to vacate. Vehicles list was also given to seek passes. March 26: An Indian preacher who attended the gathering in Delhi is tested positive and dies in Srinagar. March 26: SDM visits the Markaz and calls the Jamaat officials for a meeting with the District Magistrate. March 27: Six coronavirus suspects are taken away from the Markaz for medical checkup and are later put in a quarantine facility in Jhajjar, Haryana. March 28: A World Health Organisation (WHO) team along with the SDM visit the Markaz. 33 people who were taken for medical checkup are isolated at Rajiv Gandhi Cancer Hospital in Delhi. March 28: ACP, Lajpat Nagar, sends a notice to the Markaz to vacate immediately. March 29: Markaz officials respond to the ACP's letter saying no new people were allowed to gather post the nationwide lockdown announcement. The current gathering had started much before the lockdown and that the PM in his lockdown speech said jo jahaan hai, vahin rahe (stay put wherever you are). 29 March night: Police and health authorities start taking out people from the Markaz and send them to hospitals and quarantine facilities. So, while the meet and its continuation was stupid, reckless and illegal, it is not really an excuse to target an entire religion as if everyone is guilty and all this was done with malice in mind. Misses a very important point. Delhi, Maharashtra, Kerala and Karnataka (some areas) were in the process of a soft lockdown even before the janata curfew. For example in Mumbai, pune and surrounding areas, the lockdown process started on Friday, 2 days before janta curfew.

Sapola
Thing about the Markaz is that a lot of people had already arrived in Feb, early-march when there was no discussion about lock down. So there is definitely a lot of irresponsible behavioral on Jamaat's part, there was also intelligence failure on govt part that people from all over the world were allowed to visit India, to perform Tabligh activities which are not allowed as per visa rules. l33tmaniac
I am getting a feeling that a lot of the recent posts here regarding Corona are taking a religious hue. That's something that I definitely don't want to see from IVG. While I am not going to question the stupidity of not wanting to test for Corona or the fact that folks stayed put even after the meeting, do we really have first-hand information (beyond selective tweets/info from media outlets like Times Now which are downright right leaning) about why they had to stay? It's easy to jump to conclusions without even attempting to understand what's going on. We have enough trolls in social media and I'd loath for IVG to be a place dominated by religious sentiments/bias instead of good ol' fashioned logic. I am saying this because it's likely that these poor folks who got infected just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Imagine if the reaction would be similar if the Kumbhmela happened at the same time as the outbreak? Mods, please ensure that we stick to facts instead of opinions.
