  • Naughty Dog is apparently working on a The Last Of Us remake for PS5
  • Bigger news here though is that Sony seems to prioritize big teams with big games above all else; a heavy focus on hits only it seems
  • There is also a new Uncharted game in development by Naughty Dog which a team of Bend Studio had to help with until they feared to get absorbed by ND and asked to be taking off the project (they are now working on their own new game)
  • Days Gone - despite being profitable - will not receive a sequel, possibly due to production issues and the critical reception

This is the worst news i have heard from sony's side amongst all the bad news. Please dont kill days gone, its one heck of a game.

Which means what people are saying is coming true? Sony does not want to take chances and just milk big IP's?? Hope this isnt the case. Reason why PS4 gen was good because it came up with new good IP's.

WTH? Remaking TLOU1 and rejecting DG2? Talk about priorities. TLOU1 doesn't need a remake at all. A pure waste of ND's talent and time.

Arrogant Sony is back.

There is no other way to spin it. This is grade A bullshit. The pillar of Sony's success, their first party lineup is being condensed to a few blockbusters. I seriously hope this backfires down the line and someone like Andrew house replaces Jim Ryan.

They've also shuttered Japan Studio, where some of their most impactful games were developed.

And rumours are strong Kojima is working with MS on the next exclusive game.

Lets see.

Yep. People buy PS5 for future exclusives and Sony is like "lol no"

Sony has just stopped communicating with social media

much like Nintendo

M$ has become the bread & butter for all these bloggers

Recently i’v seen all PS channels & bloggers on free mediums turn to Xbox news & views all day long

Coz M$ is just talking so much more while Sony has gone dead silent with just announcements on need to know bases

I mean you never see Sony executives toss around names of developers & deals that are/were in pipeline

They just show things when ready

& M$ has been all talk but hasn’t shown!! anything good for last 5 years

if your negativity comment was about the self-proclaimed "insiders" who put stuff on the internet to gain views, then I agree with you that both the sides need to pay less attention to them.

But Jason is an actual reporter and is chummy with development studio employees. He's the one who broke the Cyberpunk piece. Dude has written a whole book about development studios. I mean, I don't like the guy's attitude either, but can't find fault with his work. Man and his trade are separate entities.

I specifically mentioned Twitter accounts & blog posts

Not journalism web sites

Bloomberg just posted that TLOU1 is getting a remake

which could be a remaster much like Spider-Man for all we know

& Days Gone 2 isn’t in development

The report via Bloomberg isn't just concerning because of the couple of games they talk about. It is concerning because it reports about the attitude shift at Sony. For example -

Quote

Sony's prioritization of the biggest games and studios has created ripple effects all across the organization. For example, over the last year Sony's Bend studio, once seen as a rising star, has been assigned to support Naughty Dog and feared becoming Naughty Dog North
- Jason Schreier

Quote

There have been plenty of whispers of Sony's "secret San Diego team" over the past three years, but many fans assumed they were making a new Uncharted game. That was never the case, and in fact, the team struggled to find support from the outset
- Jason Schreier

Michael Mumbauer, who founded the Visual Arts Service Group in 2007, recruited a group of about 30 developers, internally and from neighboring game studios, to form a new development unit within Sony. The idea was to expand upon some of the company’s most successful franchises and the team began working on a remake of the 2013 hit The Last of Us for the PlayStation 5. But Sony never fully acknowledged the team’s existence or gave them the funding and support needed to succeed in the highly competitive video game market, according to people involved. The studio never even got its own name. Instead, Sony moved ownership of the The Last of Us remake to its original creator, Naughty Dog, a Sony-owned studio behind many of the company’s best-selling games and an HBO television series in development.

I think the remake is being made to boost the planned TV series but visually speaking, the enhanced version on PS4 still holds up today. I really hope Sony creates some new IP’s this gen like the last gen, because HZD, Tshushima and Days Gone were all A+ games.

Remake of first game when a superior sequel exists

If you liked the story in first game more, just watch the HBO show. In terms of gameplay the sequel leaves it in dirt.

I liked the 1st one better, my favourite game of ps3 era..

Don’t get me wrong,  2nd is also great..among my top 3 of PS4 gen..

but still  I don’t want to remaster of Tlou..

A poster from resetera posted the important bits

Schreier's article in a nutshell:

Sony's Visual Arts Service Group (SVASG)

SVAGS always had a supporting role.

SVAGS wanted to create something from scratch themselves.

They formed a new internal 'team' and they started working on a TLOU remake. It's not 'clear' if they were commisioned to do that, or if it was their own idea; or whatever reasoning there was for a TLOU remake to be their first project. (altough one can argue that it makes sense given the HBO TV Series).

SVAGS didn't get the necessary budget & support because of reasons not mentioned in the article (this seems to be a key question in the story), so we don't really know what was going on unless Schreier can tell us more.

Hermen Hulst wasnt impressed with the progress and found it to be over-budget for a remake. Project moved back to Naughty Dog (which makes sense)

SVAGS ended up being support. People left the 'new team'. Which makes sense since they are back to where they started.

Bend Studio:

The Days Gone-IP seems to have been put on hold for now because because reception wasnt as expected and it had too lengthy development.

Bend was asked to help out on ND's multiplayer game, and work on 'an Uncharted' game.

Bend disagreed ("we dont want to become a Naughty Dog 'North') and gave back the Uncharted-project so they could also work on a new game of their own, next to supporting the ND multiplayer game. The state of the new game is unknown, it's still very early.

Japan Studio:

basically got dissolved because Sony doesn't have the faith that they could produce games that were big successes world wide.

Conclusion: Sony is prioritizing their big franchises and is asking other studios to help out. We currently don't know what Sony's strategy is regarding new/smaller IPs, internally or externally.

Let the shift in attitude get reflected

not reported

Speak to yourself for a moment & see what sony has given us in terms of content last few years & this year itself

Do you think they will just halt the mechanism all of a sudden

On the other hand the competition has done nothing but talk talk talk about “things to come” to make them “look” good

& then having to rely on abnormal deals to move units

Ohh god

You would've been right if it wasn't Jason Schreier. I don't remember a time when he wasn't right.

This is why i bothered to comment. Say what you will buy he's always been on point. Cyberpunk 2077 latest example.

The last of us remastered too still holds to this date , why even bother with it? I bet almost anyone meaning to play it has already played it. a dlc for Last of us part 2 would be better.
